A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
