Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense official has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified information in all cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese cars.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The broader security situation underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all areas of government activities, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
